With the 17th pick in the 2009 draft the NY Jets select..........

I know there is a realistic chance the Jets will go for either Josh Freeman or Mark Sanchez in the draft this weekend. This is a huge mistake, but with a new coaching staff in place Mr. T may feel a bit of peer pressure to make this move. I guess it all comes down to Schottenhiemer's evaluation of Kellen Clemens. If Brian has any faith in #11 we will not take a QB on day one of this year’s draft. That being said, here are 8 players who should be available at #17 and who would be an excellent addition to our 2009 NY Jets.

In order of who I like: Knowshon Moreno RB Georgia, Clay Mathews OLB USC, Chris Wells RB Ohio State, Jeremy Maclin WR Missouri, Evander Hood DT Missouri (possible DE prospect), Kenny Britt WR Rutgers, Robert Ayers DE Tennessee, B.J. Raji DT B.C.(may slip down the board).

Freeman will be there at 17 and hopefully we pass. As for Sanchez, we will need to move up at least 8 to 10 spots to get him. That will cost us 2 draft picks as well as our #17. We have too many holes to fill to sacrifice that many picks. With the variety of talent that will be waiting for us at #17 I see no reason to trade up.

I have no idea if Freeman or Sanchez will ever become franchise QB's, they may both end up as future hall of famers. What I do know is we need to use our 1st round pick on a player who can have an impact this year. Realistically I don't see either one of these prospects having any impact in the NFL until late 2010 or 2011. I have no problem investing at least 8-10 games in 2009 to see if Kellen is the real deal. I have a good feeling about him.

One other note, we obviously have a bit of a hole at the TE spot. Sure, we drafted Keller last year in the late 1st round, but he is a TE/WR hybrid and not much of a blocker. I know there is talk of the Jets being interested in Brandon Pettigrew from Oklahoma St. He's big and slow and not worth a pick this high. Also taking two TE's in the first round back to back years is absurd. It makes the Keller pick last year look like a waste. And finally I have seen enough first round busts in the past years (see Kyle Brady and Anthony Becht not to mention the Doug Jolley trade debacle) to make me cry if we pick up Pettigrew this year at 17.

One last bit of news. Vernon Gholston has changed his number from 56 to 50 which was his old college number. With the departure of Eric Barton #50 became available. If you didn’t feel stupid for buying a Gholston jersey before… I’m sure you do now.
